Arsenal win the Community Shield on penalty kicks 0

Arsenal won the Community Shield on Sunday against Chelsea courtesy of a penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes.

The game started in a lively manner and it was Arsenal who saw the first real sight of goal. Winger Alex Iwobi ghosted past two Chelsea defenders, before seeing his centre across the fact the face of the goal hit Alexandre Lacazette and bounced clear.

A minute later and Chelsea ‘keeper Thibaut Courtois produced a comfortable save from a Danny Welbeck header. The Blues goalkeeper was in action soon afterwards denying Iwobi at close-range after the Nigerian had received a clever through-ball from Mohamed Elneny.

Chelsea recorded a 3-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday at Stamford Bridge, as the Gunners fell further behind their London rivals in the Premier League table.

Arsenal had the first chance of the game on just two minutes. Mesut Ozil capitalised on a mistake from David Luiz and found Alex Iwobi, who from the edge of the saw an effort deflect just wide of goal.

On 11 minutes Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill saw a header bounce over the bar from a wide free-kick. The Blues took the lead on 13 minutes. Pedro’s cross was bulleted against the bar by Diego Costa’s head, only for Blues wing-back Marcos Alonso to head home the rebound.

Arsenal ended a nine-game run without a win against Chelsea in the Premier League with a 3-0 victory over the Blues on Saturday evening.

The first shot on goal came on four minutes. It was the home side who threatened goal first as Santi Cazorla’s effort from the edge of the area was palmed away from Thibaut Courtois. On nine minutes Alexis Sanchez saw an effort on goal deflect over the bar.

Arsenal claimed the first piece of silverware of the new English season by defeating London rivals Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley on Sunday.

The clash started in a very slow manner, as the two teams tried to feel each other out. The first real threat on goal came on 15 minutes, as Cesc Fabregas put Loic Remy through on goal, only for the Frenchman to be flagged offside.

The first attempt on goal came on 23 minutes. Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil found Theo Walcott with a cross and the England forward saw his header on goal saved by Thibaut Courtois.

Arsenal have been consistently linked with a move for Chelsea ‘keeper Petr Cech this summer, but according to his agent, Cech could be heading for Turkey with Besiktas after talks began with the Turkish club.

Cech’s agent Viktor Kolar is quoted by Turkish publication Fanatik as saying: “I have been in contact with Besiktas, we are in talks,”

“Turkey is a choice for Cech, but we will decide when the league is over.”

After a slow start the visitors had a penalty appeal turned down by referee Michael Oliver, as Oscar went down in the penalty area under a challenge from young Hector Bellerin.

On 12 minutes the Gunners had a half-chance. Olivier Giroud picked up the ball in the penalty area and the Frenchman attempted to flick the ball over Thibaut Courtois, but the Chelsea keeper gathered comfortably in the end.

The visitors had a golden opportunity and a penalty appeal turned down on 16 minutes. Former-Gunner Cesc Fabregas fired a superb pass over the Arsenal defence to Oscar, who lofted the ball over David Ospina, only for Bellerin to get back onto his own goal line and clear the ball wide of goal.

Arsenal’s mooted transfer target Petr Cech has admitted that he is ready to leave Chelsea this summer, after spending this season as back-up to Belgian starlet Thibaut Courtois.

Confirmation

The Czech Republic international told the newspaper Idnes: “I don’t know what the club’s idea will be. It looks like it works well with me and Thibaut as a duo,”

“But that can work for one season only. I don’t want another one like this. There always will be speculation, I leave it for the summer,”

According to the Daily Star, Arsenal are ready to pay £7million for Chelsea keeper Petr Cech in January. The Czech star is now second choice keeper at Stamford Bridge, with Belgian star Thibaut Courtois now considered first choice for the Blues.

Unhappy

Cech is understandably believed to be unhappy at being demoted to second choice at Chelsea and considering his options in the January transfer window. The Czech Republic international has been first choice keeper with the Blues for a decade.

Arsenal lost their unbeaten Premier League record on Sunday as the Gunners suffered a 2-0 defeat at league leaders Chelsea.

The Gunners had the first attempt of the game on three minutes, as Alexis Sanchez fired well wide of goal with a long range effort. On ten minutes Sanchez collided with Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois, which led to a slight delay in play, as the Belgium international received treatment.

The game then went through a scrappy period with the biggest talking point handbags between Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger on the sidelines. The home side were awarded a penalty kick on 26 minutes.

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are competing with Premier League rivals Manchester United and Chelsea for the signature of young Belgian keeper Mike Svilar, who has been described as the ‘next Thibaut Courtois’.

Youngster

The 15-year-old has attracted attention of some of the Premier League’s big boys after impressing in youth tournaments for Belgium giants Anderlecht. The youngster has already been given a trial by Chelsea, while Arsenal is also believed to have invited Svilar for a trial.
