Elneny stepping up recovery but return still weeks away 0

Posted on February 28, 2017 by Crippy Cooke

Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny recently posted a video of himself training with his ankle heavily strapped following the injury picked up last week against Sutton United. The former Basel man is expected to be out for at least a fortnight and his ankle being in a protective boot shows he’s no closer to a return as things stand.

Elneny was substituted following the injury at Gander Green Lane, and isn’t expected back until mid to late March. The 24-year-old has endured a stop-start season with Arsenal, making just six Premier League starts. He’s racked up a paltry 554 minutes of top-flight football in 2016/17, and the lack of game time has played havoc with his form.

Oxlade-Chamberlain could miss out for the returning Elneny 0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hinted that midfielder Mohamed Elneny could make his return against Hull City in Saturday afternoon’s Premier League clash. The 24-year-old man recently reached the final of the African Cup of Nations with Egypt and is now available for selection at a time where the Gunners are desperate for solidity after consecutive league defeats.

They followed up a shock home loss to Watford with a one-sided defeat to Premier League leaders Chelsea and now find their title hopes in tatters. They can’t entertaining anything less than a win against a travel-sick Hull City side this weekend, which could mean Wenger takes no chances with his midfield. Oxlade-Chamberlain has operated in the middle of the park alongside Francis Coquelin with Granit Xhaka suspended, but may bow out of the side on Saturday.

Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny is back and available for selection or Saturday’s visit of Hull City after participating at the African Cup of Nations. The 24-year-old helped Egypt to the final of the competition but will be assessed by the club to see if he can feature on Saturday.

Manager Arsene Wenger will be keen to have the former FC Basel man back in the side as soon as possible given Arsenal’s consecutive defeats and depleted midfield, but the travelling and lack of preparation might mean he’s only fit enough for the bench.

The 3-3 draw with AFC Bournemouth not only hurt Arsenal’s top 4 bid, but also saw several players pick up injuries or minor knocks, with Francis Coquelin being one of them.

The French midfielder was substituted just before the half-hour mark as he suffered a hamstring injury, but Arsene Wenger wasn’t able to determine how long the 25-year-old will be out.

Medical tests have now showed that the injury is more serious than first feared and the manager has revealed that Coquelin will miss around 3-4 weeks of action.

“He is out for three or four weeks now. Hamstring,” Wenger told reporters earlier this morning.

Arsenal exited the EFL Cup at the quarter-final stage on Wednesday night, as Southampton defeated the Gunners 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

The visitors opened the scoring with the first real attempt on goal on 13 minutes. Sofiane Boufal saw an effort blocked but the ball fell to Dutch midfielder Jordy Clasie on the edge of the area and the former Feyenoord star struck the ball first time into the right side of the net.

Arsenal came back into the game slightly but failed to real threaten the Saints goal. The visitors were attempting to hit the Gunners on the counter-attack, although they too struggled to represent a real threat on goal.

A number of Arsenal players were on international duty this week with vital World Cup qualifiers taking place all over the world. Here is how the Gunners on international duty got on:

Mesut Ozil and Shkodran Mustafi were in the Germany squad for their squad against Norway and Finland. Both featured for the reigning world champions.

Mustafi played the full 90 minutes in a 2-0 win over Finland but had to have treatment on an ankle problem and was then an unused sub for Die Mannschaft’s 3-0 win over Norway in their first World Cup qualifier.

Will Arsenal make any more signings this summer? 2

It seems Arsenal is one of the most talked about clubs when it comes to transfer every window. The usual set of rumours is wheeled out as new. Gonzalo Higuain, Karim Benzema, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexander Lacazette all constantly set to sign for the Gunners.

Admission of guilt

All spotted at Euston or Heathrow heading to sign for Arsenal. All these stories are made to sell newspapers and space on websites. I cannot absolve myself from the blame on this issue, as obviously, we speculate about prospective new signings daily.

Arsenal are one of three Premier League clubs showing interest in Slovakia international midfielder Ondrej Duda, according to the latest reports.
