Arsenal’s Spanish striker Lucas Perez is set for a summer return to former club Deportivo La Coruna, according to the Daily Star.

Lucas only arrived at Arsenal last summer from Deportivo for a reported fee of around £17million. The Gunners snatched the striker out of the grasp of Premier League rivals Everton.

However, Lucas has failed to get much of a chance in north London and it seems he could make a loan move back to his former club.

When Lucas Perez first signed for Arsenal from Deportivo La Coruna for a reported fee of £17million a lot of Gunners fans will have been googling the striker (sounds painful). The reason being he had endured something of a nomadic career.

The versatile forward had played in Spain, Greece and the Ukraine. The then 27-year-old was not exactly the high-quality striker that the Gunners fans craved.

Arsenal attacker Lucas Perez has been granted permission to return to Spain while he steps up his rehabilitation. The former Deportivo La Coruna striker has been ruled out until the New Year with an ankle injury, but has been allowed to recover in his native country.

The 28-year-old has endured a difficult debut season at the Emirates Stadium, having amassed just 277 minutes of football in all competitions for Arsenal prior to his injury, and now isn’t likely to feature until January. Perez was given the No.9 shirt upon his summer arrival and was expected to get game time early in with Olivier Giroud injured.

Arsenal new-boy Lucas Perez was signed to bolster the attack this season as the Gunners looked to challenge for the Premier League title. However, the former Deportivo La Coruna striker wasn’t brought in to replace first-choice Olivier Giroud, or provide a plan B option from the bench, Lucas could well start in attack alongside Giroud and Alexis Sanchez.

The £17M-man can operate across the front three, but is capable of playing as a right-sided forward, cutting inside in his favoured left foot. Lucas has a good eye for goal, but his pace could be useful in behind Giroud to feed off his knock-downs and flick-ons. He would also complement Alexis Sanchez who provides a similar threat on the left flank, giving Arsenal a fearsome attack with plenty of goals.

According to BBC Sport, Arsenal’s proposed transfer targets Shkodran Mustafi of Valencia and Lucas Perez of Deportivo La Coruna should be undergoing their medicals with the London club today, and Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague has said the pair could be unveiled by Arsenal this afternoon – “Mustafi is travelling to London and will be presented as an Arsenal player alongside Lucas Perez around 3pm today.”

Arsenal are set to sign Deportivo La Coruna striker Lucas Perez this summer after meeting his £17M release clause. The Spanish centre-forward, coming off his most prolific campaign, will provide competition for first-choice Olivier Giroud in attack, while also being capable to operate on either flank. The 27-year-old might not be directly fighting with Giroud for a place in the side due to the amount of games he’s operated in as a wide forward, but who is Lucas?
