On Sunday afternoon, Danny Welbeck bagged a brace for Arsenal against Southampton in a thrilling game, which saw both teams reduced to ten men.

Southampton offered the first threat on goal on seven minutes. Dusan Tadic got in behind the Gunners defence and pulled the ball back to James Ward-Prowse, who hit a rather tame effort towards goal that Hector Bellerin cleared near the goal line.

The Saints took the lead on 17 minutes. Wing-back Cedric dug out a cross and striker Shane Long poked home at the near post. The home side struggled to create anything until the equaliser arrived on 28 minutes.

On Sunday afternoon, Arsenal needed an 88th-minute equaliser to rescue a 1-1 draw at Southampton.

The home side took the lead on three minutes. Per Mertesacker gives the ball away, Dusan Tadic beat the German defender before finding Charlie Austin, who kept himself onside and calmly beat Petr Cech.

The Saints came close to doubling their lead two minutes later, with Tadic and Austin combining once again. However, this time Cech produced a good save from Austin’s effort from a tight angle.

Austin struck the post on eight minutes from Nathan Redmond’s cross. The effort would not have counted anyway, as the referee’s assistant flagged the striker for offside.

Arsenal will look to boost their hopes of Champions League football next season when they visit Southampton on Wednesday night.

The home side now have little to play for but a top-half finish this season. The Saints form has dipped slightly in recent games, as they have failed to win any of their last four games in the top-flight. Claude Puel’s side have also failed to score in three of their last four Premier League outings.

Arsenal host Southampton at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.

Arsenal are on an unbeaten run of 19 games in all competitions after a 3-1 home win against Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday, with Alexis Sanchez scoring a brace and Theo Walcott also getting on the scoresheet.

Sanchez is the Gunners top scorer with eight goals, but looks unlikely to feature in this clash as boss Arsene Wenger normally fields a weakened side in the League Cup.

Arsenal hosts Southampton at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night, as the Gunners look to bounce back to winning ways in the top-flight.

Arsene Wenger’s side recorded a 2-1 win over Burnley on Saturday to progress to the FA Cup fifth round, but have not claimed a top-flight win in their last three outings, including being defeated 1-0 by reigning champions Chelsea in their last Premier League game.

The north London side drew the previous two games prior to the Chelsea defeat and have dropped from top to third in the table and are currently three points behind league leaders Leicester City in the table.

On Sunday Arsenal drew 1-1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford and the Gunners are now 1/400 to secure a place an automatic place in the Champions League for next season. Arsene Wenger’s side just need a win from either of their last two games to claim a place in the top three, although two draws or even a draw may even be enough.

Difference

However, once again in a big game Arsenal’s French striker Olivier Giroud failed to make a difference. His habit of disappearing in big games happened again. His hold up play was fine, but his lack of movement and pace is a real issue for the Gunners attack.

Arsenal hosts struggling QPR at the Emirates Stadium in the late kick-off on Boxing Day.

The home side heads into this clash on the back of a dramatic 2-2 draw away at ten man Liverpool last Sunday. The home side dominated for much of the game, but Arsenal looked to be heading for a victory until Martin Skrtel’s 96th minute equaliser.

In truth it was not a great performance, despite Arsene Wenger’s team holding a 2-1 lead through an Olivier Giroud goal. The draw at Anfield left the Reds sixth place in the Premier League table, four points behind fourth-place West Ham.
