Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin has lost his place in the side in recent weeks with manager Arsene Wenger preferring Granit Xhaka to operate in the deep-lying destroyer role. Even Aaron Ramsey has etched himself ahead of the French ball-winner which could spell the end for Coquelin at the Emirates Stadium.
The 25-year-old has made 22 Premier League appearances this season but has largely struggled for form, resulting in him being dropped in 2017. Coquelin qualifies as a homegrown player given the years he trained in England under the age of 21 but he’s not developed since his breakthrough season in 2014/15.
He’s had three seasons in the Premier League but has failed to hit the heights of three years ago in the last two campaigns. Initially introduced to the side to provide combative attributes and substance to nullify the opposition, Coquelin’s lack of composure in possession has been a glaring flaw and is partly the reason why he hasn’t featured much of late.
Arsenal have long been criticised for having a soft spine to the team, and for a short period Coquelin had solved their problems in the middle of the park. However, his poor form and subsequent axeing has drawn attention to a lack of depth in midfield. The Gunners need to invest in a quality midfielder so will Coquelin be sold this summer?
