In a month where everything seemed to go wrong for Arsenal, summer signing Sead Kolasinac won the Gunners Player of the Month.
In truth, there were slim pickings among the Gunners players for the award. However, the former Schalke player managed to win the award, despite only playing in two of the team’s three league games this season.
The fans vote was maybe a vote of no confidence in the players that appeared in the 4-0 hammering at Liverpool, than a vote of confidence for the Bosnia and Herzegovina star.
Made a mixed start to his Arsenal career
Kolasinac has made a mixed start to his Arsenal career since arriving in the summer from Schalke on a free transfer. The defender started the Gunners opening game of the season against Leicester, as one of the three centre-backs.
Arsene Wenger’s side conceded three goals that day but recorded a 4-3 victory at the Emirates Stadium. It would be harsh to say that Kolasinac was responsible for the three goals. However, his defensive display against the Foxes was less than impressive.
Positives to his game
His negatives from the Leicester game were that he wanted to maraud forward to aid the attack. He did pick up and assist, but he also left his fellow defenders exposed at times with his forward runs.
However, if he were deployed as a left wing-back or left-back then he would be able to put his attacking skills to good use. Last season Kolasinac scored three goals produced five assists from playing mainly in the aforementioned positions.
The 24-year-old also created the most chances of any defender in the Bundesliga last season. It is clear that he is strong. However, does not necessarily have the defensive nous to play as a centre-back.
Should play at left wing-back against Bournemouth
For me, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain now left, Hector Bellerin should switch back to right wing-back and Kolasinac should start on the left against Bournemouth this weekend a game the Gunners are odds of 4/11 to win.
I would not like to say that Kolasinac is a defensive liability, as the whole Arsenal defence has been poor this season. However, it does seem that the Gunners will be better off using Kolasinac’s attacking talents.
Kolasinac could prove to be one of the bargains of the summer. However, he needs to play in the right position to succeed at Arsenal.
Should Sead Kolasinac start at left wing-back for Arsenal this weekend?
