The seemingly never-ending saga of Alexis Sanchez’s departure from Arsenal has another new chapter, as the Chilean superstar has revealed what Arsene Wenger said when attempting to convince him to stay at the Emirates.
According to Daily Mirror, Sanchez recently did an interview with a television station in Chile which is when the comments were made. The 29-year-old was with Arsenal for four years prior to making the switch over to Old Trafford in January.
“He was very fond of me and he didn’t want to let me go,” said Sanchez.
“He told me, ‘I want you to sign here because you are the best player in the team.”
A painful reminder
The entire ordeal surrounding Sanchez is something that has plagued the Gunners over the last twelve months, with his impending move away from the Emirates coming as a major distraction for supporters. It’s no secret that he was the club’s best player by a country mile, and while his loss was a debilitating moment in the season for Arsenal, the process behind the move was almost even worse.
It’ll be tough for Arsenal fans to see him up north playing for United, but thankfully for them, things haven’t exactly gone perfectly since he completed the move. While he’s certainly proven himself to be a great addition, his contributions haven’t been quite as prolific as many United fans would’ve hoped.
Moving forward the new focus for Arsene needs to be finding new ways to not only generate these superstars but also finding ways to keep them on the books. If he can’t nurture the squad he’s got and help them grow into title contenders over the next few months, then in all likelihood, he’ll be out of a job prior to the 2018/19 campaign.
In terms of the actual quotes used by the Frenchman, it’s hardly surprising to see him pleading with Sanchez in this manner. After all, any other manager on the planet would likely employ the same tactics in order to try and keep hold of him even if it’s just for a few more months.
Arsenal will now attempt to re-focus their attention towards tonight’s blockbuster Europa League second leg against AC Milan.
Will Sanchez find more success at Old Trafford than he did with Arsenal?
