According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are looking to swap wantaway Alexis Sanchez with PSG’s Julian Draxler in January. Sanchez is of course out of contract next summer and is not signing a new deal with the Gunners.
Meanwhile, Germany international Julian Draxler has found himself out of favour in Paris after the summer arrivals Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, two of the most highly-rated attacking players in Europe.
This deal would make financial sense
If we are looking at this from a purely financial sense, it would be a good deal. Arsenal will receive absolutely nothing if Sanchez leaves in the summer and it would take mega money to replace the Chilean.
Draxler is just 24 years old and at least by doing a swap deal, the Gunners would be bringing in a player with a major sell-on value in the future. For an economist like Arsene Wenger, surely this deal would make sense.
Sanchez may not be up for PSG move
There is a major reason why this deal will not happen and that is Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean would be allowed to discuss a free transfer with foreign clubs in January. He could also just sit out his Arsenal contract and move next summer.
Allowing his contract to run down would allow him to discuss terms with any club he liked. Without a transfer fee involved, Sanchez could also demand a hefty signing on fee and bigger wages to go with it.
PSG would no doubt give the Chilean both, but you have to wonder why the Parisians would play the forward if he signed in January. Would he play every game with the likes of Edinson Cavani, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar scoring for fun? I am not sure he would get in the PSG team ahead of any of those three.
Arsene Wenger will not sell Sanchez
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger took a gamble in the summer by keeping Sanchez. The Chilean could have left on deadline day for Manchester City. However, the deal fell through.
I cannot see Wenger letting Sanchez leave in January after vehemently stating that the Chilean would be with Arsenal for the rest of the season. The veteran French boss is obviously hoping that the forward can hit top form and help the Gunners finish in the Champions League spots this season.
I actually believe that a January swap deal for Draxler would not be a terrible move by the Gunners. However, unfortunately in the past Arsenal have been linked with moves for Draxler on numerous occasions and nothing has happened. I get the feeling that it will not happen in January either.
Would a January swap of Alexis Sanchez for Julian Draxler be a good idea for Arsenal?
