You never quite know what the World Cup is going to throw up in terms of shocks and surprises, but if you’d have told people that this would be the A1 vs B2 match for the Round of 16, they probably wouldn’t have been all too surprised. Uruguay and Portugal are tenured veterans at this point and they know what it takes to progress into the knockout stages, with their elite forward leading the way. They’ll both be oozing with confidence, which could make for an incredibly fun encounter.

Uruguay

Uruguay still seem to be flying under the radar of most pundits and fans alike, even though they’re one of the few teams in the World Cup who managed to win all three of their group stage games. They’ve done everything that has been asked of them up to this point, and they seem to be growing in confidence. They proved that they’ve still got that cutting edge when they ran through Russia in their last game, and as we saw at the 2010 edition of the tournament, they’re more than capable of making a run deep into the semi-finals.

Team News

Jose Gimenez will likely be a game-day decision after suffering a small injury, but reports are suggesting that he will indeed make it back into the first team.

Portugal

They say that one man teams never truly exist in the world of football, but the Ronaldo-led Portugal are about as close as you’re ever going to get. The European champions continue to grind their way through the tournament like only they can, and they’re starting to gel as a unit because of that. They’ve got that crucial experience and they’ll have very little pressure on their shoulders, even after winning the Euros. They aren’t going to make this an attractive game to watch, and they wouldn’t have it any other way.

Team News

Gelson Martins and William Carvalho are carrying small injuries, but Ronaldo & Quaresma will likely still be fit enough to start the game and lead Portugal from the front.

Factors to Consider

  • These two teams have played each other twice: with one Portugal win, and one draw.
  • Uruguay won their group of Russia, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
  • Portugal finished second in their group of Spain, Morocco and Iran.
  • Uruguay have won three, drawn none, lost none, scored five and conceded none so far.
  • Portugal have won one, drawn two, lost none, scored five and conceded four thus far.

Conclusion

There’s a certain familiarity in the air that we’re already starting to sense with this Portuguese side. While they didn’t look great throughout all three of their group stage games they were still able to qualify, and now, they’ll take more confidence forward as a result of that. Cristiano Ronaldo is always going to cause teams problems, and while Godin is a formidable centre-back, we don’t think he’s going to be able to stop him. We’re predicting a very scrappy and very back and forth 1-0 win for Portugal.
