There are few things that satisfy 90% of football fans but seeing big teams fall in international tournaments in favour of unfancied nations certainly falls into that category. As we continue on through the Round of 16, which has already given us a phenomenal selection of games, it’ll be interesting to see how some of these countries navigate their way through the knockouts. One game, in particular, that intrigues us is the upcoming showdown between Sweden and Switzerland.

Sweden

The main source of intrigue surrounding Sweden in the weeks prior to the tournament was the fact that Zlatan Ibrahimovic would not be competing at the World Cup. Now, however, the focus is firmly placed on the fact that they’ve been able to exceed any and all expectations that were placed on their shoulders. They’ve gone about their business in a subtle way, and while they may have lost to Germany, the way they were able to bounce back from that showcases the kind of character they have.

Team News

Sebastian Larsson is out through suspension, meaning that Oscar Hiljemark or Gustav Svensson will likely come in to replace him. Augustinsson and Granqvist will lead the way from the back.

Switzerland

We’ve spoken about how the Swiss have a tag of being a nation who do well but can’t quite reach that next level. In this game, they’ve got a huge opportunity to shed that title when they face off against Sweden. They’ve got a solid core than runs throughout their squad, and they’ve got players with the big match experience under their belt. If they can keep calm in the early stages and play the Swedes at their own game defensively, they may be able to sneak their way through.

Team News

Lichtsteiner & Schar will be big misses at the back through suspension, but there are plenty of questions regarding who will actually start the game up front. Xhaka & Embolo will be seen as the key targets for the Swiss in their attempt to progress.

Factors to Consider

  • Sweden & Switzerland are tied at 10-10 in the head to head, with seven draws.
  • Switzerland have won one, drawn two and lost none so far in the World Cup.
  • Sweden have won two, drawn none and lost one so far in the World Cup.
  • Switzerland have scored five and conceded four so far in the tournament.
  • Sweden have scored five and conceded two so far in the tournament.

Conclusion

While we’re all hoping that the remainder of the games at the World Cup are as entertaining as France vs Argentina, we think this one will more closely resemble Russia vs Spain. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, either, because it’ll be interesting to see which team sits off and which comes forward with intent. We can see the Swiss struggling under the weight of being the favourites, which will open the door for the Swedes to edge out an entertaining 2-1 win.
