After one of the most entertaining international tournaments in recent memory, the 2018 FIFA World Cup will finally come to an end tomorrow night at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. France and Croatia are the two teams who have made their way through six gruelling games in order to get to the final, and now, they’re just 90 minutes away from becoming the world champions. Both have what it takes to cross the finish line, but in the end, there can only be one.

France

France may not have won over too many neutrals aside from their dramatic win over Argentina, but they’ve certainly earned their place in the final. They battled through a tricky group containing Denmark, Australia and Peru, before overcoming Uruguay and Belgium after they’d sent Lionel Messi home. They’ve got some lethal attacking players that still haven’t even reached that next level, and they’ll want to rid themselves of the memories from the Euro 2016 final that have been lingering for two years.

Team News

The French have no fresh injury concerns and will look towards their semi-final heroes, from Hugo Lloris all the way through to Kylian Mbappe who could confirm his position as one of the best footballers on the planet with a goal or two in the final.

Croatia

The talk of ‘golden generations’ often lead to disappointment for many nations, but for Croatia, they’ve been able to live up to their potential en route to the final. They were placed in the perceived ‘Group of Death’ alongside Argentina, Nigeria and Iceland, and they came through with flying colours after three consecutive victories. They struggled through the next two rounds, though, being forced to go to penalties against Denmark and Russia before an extra time triumph over England.

Team News

Croatia are expected to keep the same starting Xi from the semi-final against England, with Luka Modric being viewed as the talisman who is expected to lead them to glory. Beyond that, though, Mario Mandzukic will be expected to provide the goods in front of goal.

Factors to Consider

  • France are unbeaten against Croatia with three wins and two draws, including a 2-1 triumph in their 1998¬†WC semi-final.
  • Croatia have gone to extra time in all three of their knockout games so far.
  • France have won inside 90 minutes in all three of their knockout games so far.
  • Croatia have scored twelve goals and conceded five at the 2018 World Cup.
  • France have scored ten goals and conceded four at the 2018 World Cup.

Conclusion

This is the time for players to stand up and be counted, and over the course of the tournament, it feels like Les Bleus have proven themselves to be a team who can cope with anything that’s thrown at them. We can see them scoring early against Croatia and pulling away late on, securing a 2-0 victory that may end up frustrating some fans. While we can understand why it won’t matter because, at the end of the day, the French will be known across the land as the world champions.
