France will be pleased with the draw, as Les Bleus are not paired with any other European heavyweight. Australia will believe that they have a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages ahead of Peru and Denmark. However, this game is a daunting start for the Socceroo’s in Russia.

France

Didier Deschamps squad of players for this summer’s tournament is arguably the most talented. Talented youngsters like Ousmane Dembele and Thomas Lemar join stars of the European game like Kylian Mbappe, Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann in Les Bleus squad.

At their last international tournament, France suffered a 1-0 extra-time defeat against Portugal in the final of Euro 2016 on home soil. This squad of players has the talent to go one step further this time. It is just whether Deschamps can get the best out of his talented charges.

Team News

France have doubts over the fitness of defensive pair Samuel Umtiti and Djibril Sidibe, while PSG forward Kylian Mbappe also has a knock. Presnel Kimpembe and Benjamin Pavard are on stand-by to deputise for the defensive pair. The likes of Nabil Fekir and Thomas Lemar could deputise for Mbappe. Former Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud may start the game on the bench.

Australia

Australia will be taking part in their third consecutive World Cup finals this summer after previously only appearing in one way back in 1974. Making the knockout stages of the competition in 2006 remains the Socceroo’s biggest achievement.

One man who has played at all three previous World Cups is veteran forward Tim Cahill. In fact, the former Everton star has scored in the last three World Cups. He could join the select band of Pele, Miroslav Klose and Uwe Seeler as a player who has scored at four World Cups.

Bart van Marwijk’s side are unfancied to qualify for the knockout stages. However, they are tough to beat and are unlikely to be easy opponents for France.

Team News

Australia have no reported injuries heading into this clash. The aforementioned Cahill may have to wait for his chance to make history, as the forward is likely to start this game on the substitute bench.

Conclusion

France have been slightly unconvincing in recent friendly games. However, the talent that is Deschamps squad should be enough to ensure a pretty comfortable victory for the French in Kazan. Australia are functional, but in terms of quality they are likely struggle against the French.

Verdict: France Win
