It’s a tough start for Egypt as they face Uruguay in their first game of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but it shouldn’t be too easy for the South-Americans either. It should be an interesting goalscorer contest between two players that earned high praise in a Liverpool shirt – Mohamed Salah and Luis Suarez. Of course, Suarez has been playing for Barcelona since his move to Catalonia in 2014.

Egypt

The Pharaohs didn’t show particularly great levels of form recently, winning none and losing three of their last five games.

Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny is expected to play a significant role in the team as Egypt strive to make a good start at the tournament.

Team News

The Egyptians were sweating severely over the fitness of Salah, but according to multiple reports, their best player has recovered in time from the shoulder injury inflicted by a tangle with Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos in the Champions League final less then a month ago. He is therefore expected to start.

Uruguay

Luis Suarez claims he has significantly matured as a player and a person since the last two World Cups. In South Africa in 2010 he prevented a certain Ghana goal by using his hands to make a proper goalkeeping save on the very line, and four years later he bit Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder and earned himself a four-month suspension from all football activities.

He will want to remember this tournament for the right reasons, for a change.

Team News

Suarez will lead Uruguay’s attack alongside Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani. The pair shoould be supported closely by Inter Milan’s Matias Vecino. Arsenal fans will be hoping that Lucas Torreira, who is reportedly very close to a move to the Emirates, starts in his role as a holding midfielder.

Things to consider

  • The most important thing to bear in mind is the enormous quality of the two players leading the attacking lines of the two teams. In his last season with Liverpool, Luis Suarez equaled the Premier League record goal-tally in a 38-game system of 31 goals held previously by Alan Shearer and Cristiano Ronaldo.
  • That record has been broken in 2017/18 – by none other than Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, who netted 32 times in England’s top flight for Jürgen Klopp’s team.
  • Apart from Suarez, the Egyptian defence will have Cavani to think about as well. The two Uruguayan strikers have bagged 91 international goals between them so far, which isn’t to be ignored.
  • Their only head-to-head clash in recent history was a friendly game played in August 2006, and it ended with a 0-2 Uruguay win.

Conclusion

On paper, Uruguay have a more experienced team full of players of proven quality, and they are the favorites to win, but the Salah-inspired Egyptians are certainly capable of pulling a surprise in this game. It should be an interesting, dynamic contest with plenty of chances and with a few goals on both sides.
