Group C was viewed as a formality and nothing more at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, with France expected to run through the other three teams on their way to the knockout stages. While it’s pretty much worked out that way thus far, there are still a handful of potential twists and turns to come as we approach the final set of fixtures for the group stages. In this game, France will be taking on a Denmark side who are still in with a fantastic chance of qualifying for the Round of 16.

Denmark

Coming into this tournament the Danes didn’t have all too much momentum in comparison to some of Europe’s elite, but with one group stage game remaining, they find themselves in a great position with the knockout stages being just around the corner. While they haven’t quite discovered that killer instinct necessary to finish teams off just yet, they still have four points after two games – which is more than can be said of nations who have actually played better football than them thus far.

Team News

There likely won’t be any changes made to Denmark’s starting XI after they picked up four points from their first two games. They have a solid base defensively, with Christian Eriksen leading the way as their talisman.

France

As one of the favourites to lift the World Cup trophy this summer, there was always going to be a great deal of pressure on the French. Up to this point, however, they’ve dealt with it pretty well, securing back-to-back victories against tough teams despite not looking all too remarkable in the process. They’re gradually starting to find their rhythm and they’ll want to make a big statement against Denmark in this one, ensuring that they win the group with minimal difficulty.

Team News

Nabil Fekir and Ousmane Dembele could receive starts in this one now that France have secured their passage into the next round of the tournament, which could open the door for key players to be rested even though they’ll want to win the group.

Factors to Consider

  • France have an 8-4 lead over Denmark in the head to head, with one draw.
  • Denmark won their first WC game 1-0 against Peru, drawing 1-1 against Australia in the second.
  • France won their first WC game 2-1 against Australia, winning 1-0 against Peru in the second.
  • Denmark have scored two and conceded one in the tournament.
  • France have scored three and conceded one in the tournament.

Conclusion

As we’ve already alluded to, the French haven’t looked outstanding at any point throughout the course of the tournament so far. For all of their quality from top to bottom they haven’t been able to translate that into convincing results, and yet, we’re still confident in saying that they’ll defeat Denmark without having to break too much of a sweat. We’re going to say that they’ll come away with a 2-0 victory, giving them maximum points heading into a very winnable Round of 16 fixture.
