We’ve arrived at the semi-final stage of 2018 FIFA World Cup, and very few people could’ve imagined that this would be the final four we’d end up with. France, Belgium, Croatia and England are all in with a phenomenal chance of becoming world champions, but only one nation can fulfil that prophecy. The French and the Belgians will kick things off tonight, and then tomorrow, the second place in the World Cup final will be determined as dark horses Croatia and England battle it out.

Croatia

The golden generation talk has been floated around for years now when it comes to the Croats, and just like in 1998, they’ve been able to exceed all expectations by progressing into the semi-finals of the World Cup. The most important thing for them will be keeping their core structure intact throughout the course of this game, not allowing England to disrupt their rhythm. The English will come out fighting as they push for an early goal as they have done throughout the tournament, and neutralising that will be vital.

Team News

Luka Modric will lead the line as Croatia’s main man, and everything will go through him in the middle of the park. Subasic and¬†Vrsaljko missed out on training as a precaution but should be fit enough to start.

England

Is it coming home? If you ask anyone in England then the answer would be a resounding yes, and can you blame them? Gareth Southgate has completely revitalised this squad en-route to the semi-finals of this tournament and after years of disappointment, another World Cup final for the first time since 1966 is just 90 minutes away. They have the heart and drive necessary to get past Croatia and if they can showcase the same kind of quality they did against Sweden, they’ve got a great chance.

Team News

England should have a close to 100% bill of fitness with Harry Kane and Dele Alli both overcoming small niggles to ensure that they start for the Three Lions in their first WC semi-final since 1990.

Factors to Consider

  • England lead 4-2 in the head to head, winning their last two games against Croatia.
  • Croatia drew both of their knockout stages, progressing on penalties.
  • England beat Sweden and drew with Colombia in the knockouts, winning the latter on penalties.
  • Croatia have scored ten goals and conceded four at the World Cup.
  • England have scored eleven goals and conceded four at the World Cup.

Conclusion

Both of these teams have been waiting at least 20 years for another chance at competing in a World Cup semi-final, and neither will be quick to surrender tomorrow night. On paper, Croatia have the stronger side, but that’s never been how things have worked in football. This’ll be the definition of a closely fought game but we believe the Croats’ golden generation will be able to shine through, racing into a two-goal lead before eventually holding on to pick up a 2-1 victory and a place in the World Cup final.
