Former-Arsenal legend Patrick Viera has given his verdict on Granit Xhaka and Jack Wilshere’s partnership in the midfield, as it has been a problem are for Arsene Wenger and his team as their options in defensive-midfield have not proved to be good enough in the Premier League this season.
Arsenal battled to a 3-3 draw with Liverpool on Friday as they failed to win yet again. Of course, they did embark upon a stirring comeback from 2-0 down to lead 3-2. However, they once again let their momentum falter as they conceded, and that is as far as the scoring went, with the game ending in a draw.
The stalemate means that Arsenal have fallen down to sixth in the league with 34 points, one behind Liverpool in fourth. Of course, they are very close to retaking a place in the Champions League, but they cannot afford to let the teams above them extend their lead, meaning they must start to win their games.
Despite dropping points, there were a number of positives from the game, with Jack Wilshere and Granit Xhaka forming a new partnership in the middle. On that pairing, Patrick Viera told Sky Sports: “I think it’s completely different. When you look at Petit and myself, we used to be really aggressive because that was our strength. If you look at Wilshere and Xhaka in the midfield, they are more technical than physical and that is the direction the manager wanted to take”.
It seems that this isn’t the type of partnership that Viera would have formed then, but if the two are able to provide a solid foundation in the middle that is also able to use the ball well, then it will only improve the Gunners.
