According to reports from the Metro (among others), Arsenal are lining up a £35million bid for Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha as a replacement for wantaway Chilean international Alexis Sanchez.
The Metro reports that Manchester City could renew their interest in Sanchez in the winter transfer window. However, if the Chilean fails to secure a move in the January transfer window, he will likely leave the Gunners next summer as a free agent.
That obviously means Arsenal need to find a replacement for the 28-year-old, as well as Mesut Ozil who also looks set to leave.
Zaha has improved immensely over the last few years
Wilfried Zaha is now considered a very good Premier League player. The 25-year-old has missed much of the current campaign through injury, although he has registered two goals since returning from injury.
Last season the former Manchester United star finally found consistency. The winger scored seven goals and produced nine assists in the Premier League, as he helped the Eagles avoid relegation.
His pace and trickery now seem to be allied with consistent performances in the top-flight.
Ready to move on
Zaha was reportedly a target for Arsenal’s arch-rivals Tottenham last summer. However, understandably the Eagles were not keen on parting company with their star player.
There were reports that suggested Zaha was keen on the move to north London. He has already endured a difficult time at a bigger club, when he moved to United, only to move back to Palace.
However, Zaha is a far better and more experienced player now. With Palace one of the favourites to be relegated at 8/15, the winger may well be keen on a switch to north London in the near future.
Not a bad signing
For me, Zaha would not be a terrible signing. He is just approaching the peak years of his football career. Zaha has now also shown that he can produce on a more consistent basis.
In a better team with better teammates, he may well push on again and start to fulfil his potential. Many would say he is not a world-class player. However, Arsenal have struggled to attract world-class players in recent years.
He is the sort of player with scope for improvement in the future. He is still 25 and playing in a poor Palace team. Who knows Zaha may just prove to be a shrewd signing for the Gunners.
Would Wilfried Zaha be a good signing for Arsenal?
