French forward Olivier Giroud has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Premier League champions Chelsea who continue their desperate search for reinforcements in their attack line.
Blues have been in lockdown with negotiations over AS Roma striker Edin Dzeko and, according to reports coming from Daily Mail, Antonio Conte is drawing up a contingency plan should the Bosnian forward reject a chance to move to Stamford Bridge.
The 31-year-old Olivier Giroud has been widely linked with a move away from Arsenal and will have his faith sealed once the Gunners wrap up a move for Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Giroud was being mentioned as part of the deal but seems to be unwilling to move to Germany. French forward loves being in London and is pushing for a stay which is why Chelsea appear to be the perfect solution for him.
Blues look to provide cover, support and alternative to No.9 Alvaro Morata and are said to be considering Giroud as one of many backup options for the first-choice target Edin Dzeko.
The former Montpellier star is on a £90,000 a week deal at Arsenal and Chelsea would not have any problem matching his wages.
Giroud will be keen to have his future sorted as soon as possible, as he looks to gain more frequent playing time in the second half of the season in order to boost his chances of making it into France’s World Cup squad this summer.
French international has started only one Premier League match this season. He made further 14 substitute appearances, scoring four goals in the process. On the other hand, Giroud has been Arsenal’s first choice for the Europa League campaign.
He started all six European matches for Gunners this season and scored three goals.
