Arsenal fans were hoping for a new centre-back and a new striker in the summer transfer window. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger kept his powder dry until deadline day. The Frenchman then signed Shkodran Mustafi and striker Lucas Perez.
Lucas may take a while to adapt to his new surroundings, but Mustafi has already produced very positive signs that he has what it takes to be a top Premier League centre-back.
Why didn’t Mustafi arrive sooner?
It is still a mystery to most Arsenal fans as to why Wenger took so long to sign Mustafi when he knew all summer the Gunners needed another centre-back. I highly doubt Valencia were asking more for the German earlier in the summer, so why leave it until deadline day?
The question has probably been asked a thousand times before, but at least now the Gunners have their man and he looks accomplished.
A blossoming partnership with Koscielny
Arsenal have been decent at the back in recent years, but there was always a feeling that Laurent Koscielny was the best centre-back at the club and if he had the right partner the Gunners could be very solid.
Well from the start the former-Everton centre-back Mustafi has made, the 24-year-old could just be that perfect partner for the Frenchman. Brazilian star Gabriel is slightly unlucky, as he has not been terrible, but I get the sense that Koscielny and Mustafi are blossoming as a partnership.
The pair have not played that many times together, but there already seems to be an understanding between the pair. If either of them gets injured then Gabriel is a more than capable replacement for either of the pair.
Hopeful of a real title challenge
It seems that the Arsenal defence is safer than ever with Mustafi and Koscielny at centre-back and Petr Cech in goal. The question mark is can the forwards carry on scoring at the other end to end the long wait for a Premier League title triumph.
The likes of Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil have hit form of late. There have been so many failed title bids in recent years. However, hopefully, the Gunners now have all the key ingredients to make a real title challenge this season.
The new centre-back pairing could just be the key to the Gunners winning that elusive title this season.
