La Liga title contenders Barcelona have stepped up the chase for Arsenal star Mesut Ozil.
The Catalans have been informed of the German international’s availability by Arsene Wenger himself, claims Don Balon, and have moved forward to open talks regarding a possible January move.
Wenger is keen to cash in on his wantaway star rather than lose him for free when Ozil’s contract expires at the end of the season and Barcelona are prepared to take advantage of such a situation.
The Catalans are said to be willing to go as far as £17.8 million to get Ozil off of Arsenal’s books and have already opened talks with the player himself about his wage demands and other personal details.
Diario AS is spreading the word that the 29-year-old German midfield genius is demanding £330,000 per week from Barcelona, which makes it whopping £17 million a year before taxes.
Barcelona regard Mesut Ozil as a perfect Philippe Coutinho alternative and a valuable cost-effective addition to the squad and are willing to explore the option of adding Mesut Ozil to their ranks.
The Catalans will first have to make room in their budget, knowing that Leo Messi’s renewal will take up a significant portion of the available wage funds and Diario AS also reports that Ozil’s move to Camp Nou could very much depend on Arda Turan.
The Turkish midfielder does not feature in Ernesto Valverde’s plans and will be given all clear to leave Barcelona during winger. Turan has already been linked with a move away from Barcelona this summer but he decided to stay and fight for his place in the team.
The winter, however, is likely to see Barcelona push a bit harder to part ways with Turan and thus make way for what would truly be a sensational return to La Liga for former Real Madrid star Mesut Ozil.
