Arsenal legend Martin Keown believes the Gunners’ 1-0 defeat away to Stoke City is exactly why they won’t win the Premier League title this season. The Londoners travelled to the Britannia Stadium on Saturday evening, but put in a disjointed performance with a makeshift side and suffered their first league defeat just two games into the new season.
The 51-year-old said on BT Sport: “Arsenal were loose in the midfield. They’ve just gone through the Arsenal defence so easily. They really didn’t create enough, not enough opportunities. It’s a disappointing afternoon for Arsenal so early in the season. They have aspirations to win the league, they didn’t look like champions to me today,” reports the Express.
Arsenal’s surprise defeat to Stoke now sees them 11th in the Premier League table with three points from their two games this season, having beaten Leicester City 4-3 at the Emirates Stadium before coming unstuck at the Britannia Stadium. The Gunners are 17/1 to win the Premier League title, but already face a mountain to climb given the games they have to come.
Arsenal’s next three Premier League games
- 27/8/17 (Premier League) Liverpool vs Arsenal
- 9/9/17 (Premier League) Arsenal vs Bournemouth
- 17/9/17 (Premier League) Chelsea vs Arsenal
Keown has doubted Arsenal’s title credentials and a lot of supporters may agree with his pessimism given the Gunners’ two performances in the Premier League. They weren’t too convincing against Leicester despite the win, but having lost to a below-par Stoke side could see a reaction.
