Manchester United eying-up Arsenal pair

Posted on March 29, 2017 by David Nugent

Manchester United are monitoring the situations of Arsenal pair Mesut Ozil and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, according to the Metro.

The reports suggest that Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is looking at adding to his midfield options in the summer, with Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ozil being two players of interest to the Portuguese boss.

Never really nailed down a first team spot

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for all his supposed potential has never really nailed down a spot in the Gunners starting line-up. He has been in and out of the team in recent years and despite the Gunners not always thriving has struggled to get in the team on a regular basis.

A goal return of three goals in two seasons is not great for a player who is considered an attack-minded midfielder. However, the 23-year-old is reportedly in-demand this summer. Manchester City, Everton and Liverpool are all believed to be interested in signing the midfielder.

Oxlade-Chamberlain will have just 12 months left on his contract this summer. The versatile star has previously expressed a desire to play more regular first team football. That may well be at Old Trafford next season.

Ozil’s future up in the air

Mourinho is a big fan of Ozil from their days working together at Real Madrid. Ozil like Oxlade-Chamberlain will have 12 months left on his contract in the summer. Talks have been ongoing and he has recently stated he loves Arsenal.

Ozil has been linked with moves to the likes of Chelsea and Bayern Munich. However, his future is still up in the air. Ozil arguably produced some of the best football of his career under Mourinho at Real Madrid.

This season the Germany playmaker has flattered to deceive this season, after shining for much of last season. Whether he leaves the Gunners this summer or not remains to be seen.

Champions League qualification massive

Although it has been a rod used to beat Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger with in recent years, qualification for the Champions League is vital for Arsenal.

The Frenchman has his work cut guiding the Gunners to a top-four finish this season, with Arsenal odds of 3/1 to finish in the Champions League spots this season.

With competition seemingly stiffer every season for those top-four spots Arsenal cannot afford to lose players like Ozil. What would be worse would be losing him to a potential rival for next season’s title and top four spots.

Will Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain be playing for Arsenal next season?
