Premier League rivals Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are looking to prize Spanish midfielder Mikel Arteta away from the Emirates at the end of the season, according to the Daily Mirror.
Before you start wondering why on earth would the title contenders want the 34-year-old in their midfield department, we should note that the two clubs want the Spaniard to take up a coaching role.
Namely, the veteran midfielder could decide to retire from football at the end of the current campaign, with his contract at Arsenal set to expire and the injury problems still very much present.
But, since the Gunners do not seem prepared to offer Arteta an opportunity to stay as part of club’s coaching staff, Manchester City appear set to offer the Spaniard a coaching role at Etihad Stadium.
After Patrick Vieira was overlooked by Arsenal and joined the Citizens instead, Mikel Arteta could do the same unless Arsene Wenger changes his mind.
At the same time, Tottenham Hotspur are another potential destination for the veteran footballer due to close ties with Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.
However, it remains to be seen whether Arteta would be prepared to join the Spurs in any capacity having spent last five years with Arsenal.
Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Vieira are the two Arsenal legends who now work at other clubs having not been offered a coaching job at the Emirates, and while the Spaniard cannot fall into said category, Arsene Wenger should probably reconsider his staff recruitment policy.
