Much-changed Arsenal side enjoyed a comfortable 4-0 triumph over Nottingham Forest at The City Ground and it was summer recruit Lucas Perez who stole the show, scoring a brace in his third appearance for the club.
Arsene Wenger had decided to rest quite a few first team regulars and handed starts to Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Jeff Reine-Adelaide and Chuba Akpom, among others, but Forest failed to take advantage of his risky selection policy.
The Gunners instead produced a very good performance to record a 4-0 triumph, with Jeff Reine-Adelaide the most impressive of the three youngsters that were in the starting line-up.
However, it was Spanish striker Lucas Perez who was our Man of the Match, scoring two goals and setting up another to prove all the doubters wrong.
Granted, he was up against Championship defenders rather than world-class centre-backs he will be facing on the Premier League and Champions League, but that was, nonetheless, a very good performance from the former Deportivo La Coruna man.
In addition to making a key impact in the final third, the 28-year-old also worked hard for the team and looked unfazed by the recent harsh words directed his way, and no doubt that the two goals he scored at The City Ground will do wonders for his confidence.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was obviously impressed with the Spaniard, albeit taking note of the fact that Lucas Perez is relying too much on his left foot.
“He did well. He’s quick, he’s determined,” Wenger told reporters after the game.
“He uses well his left foot – a bit too much in my taste. He doesn’t use his right enough.
“Overall he’s like all the left-footed players, you know.”
It remains to be seen whether Perez has done enough to earn a starting berth for the weekend’s clash with Chelsea, where Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez could also start up front.
