It seems that Costa Rica international forward Joel Campbell is returning to England and Arsenal. The Winger could be sidelined for up to six months through a knee injury picked up while away with his national side.
The injury has prevented the 25-year-old leaving the club this summer, with his contract expiring next summer. Now some Arsenal fans are talking about Campbell as if he could save their season. The scenario seems far-fetched, but it does beggar the question could he have a role to play at Arsenal this season?
Decent and has potential
Campbell is a player with potential and has shown himself to be a decent player in flashes for the Gunners. However, the winger has struggled to nail down a starting spot in north London, making just 40 appearances for the Gunners since joining in 2011.
Due to the lack of first team football at Arsenal, he has become something of a journeyman through a series of loan moves, including in Portugal at Sporting Lisbon last season.
He did not exactly set the world on fire in the Portuguese capital, though, scoring just three times in 28 appearances for Sporting.
No longer a youngster
At 25, he needs to show something more than just potential, though. Campbell is no longer a youngster and cannot live on just potential for much longer. Arguably, he was not given much of a chance at Arsenal.
However, maybe Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger realised that he was never going to improve as a player. Maybe the veteran was keeping his options open on the winger, hoping that loan spells would help him bring the best out of him.
They obviously have not, as he has failed to impress in most of his loan spells. There is no indication that anything would be different if he was part of the Gunners squad.
At the moment it seems highly unlikely that when Campbell is fit that he would even get into the Arsenal. There is so much competition for places in the Gunners team that he would even struggle to get into their squad.
The Arsenal fans that are hoping for Campbell to return and be some kind of saviour must be slightly delusional or simply joking. I can see the Costa Rican leaving when his contract expires next summer, without having made another appearance for the Gunners.
Does Joel Campbell still have a role to play at Arsenal?
