Arsenal are looking to revitalize the backline this summer and are said to be looking towards Newcastle to boost their defensive options.
Gunners have done well to reinforce the front lines of their squad over the past two transfer windows but their defensive frailties are once again exposed and Arsene Wenger is keen to bolster his backline at the end of the season.
According to the reports coming from Daily Star, Arsenal have set their sights on Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles who has gone through a steady rise to prominence ever since he had been handed a skipper’s armband 18 months ago.
Lascelles was last summer rewarded with a six-year contract at the Toon and Rafa Benitez is keen to hold on to highly-rated defender despite the growing interest in his services.
Jamaal Lascelles is also targeted by Chelsea and Newcastle United face a battle to fight off any interest despite the financial power of the London-based clubs who could lure Lascelles with more than a double amount he is currently earning with Newcastle (£35,000).
The 24-year-old centre-back formed a strong defensive partnership with Florian Lejeune and his exploits this season have recommended him to England manager Gareth Southgate ahead of the World Cup this summer.
Jamaal Lascelles made 21 Premier League appearances for Newcastle United this season. The total of 1,938 minutes he spent on the pitch saw him add three goals to his club’s cause this season.
