According to the Express, Arsenal are attempting to negotiate a fee with Sevilla for France international midfielder Steven Nzonzi. The 29-year-old has a release clause of around £35.7million in his contract.
However, the Gunners are not prepared to meet the clause, but the Andalusians director of football Joaquin Caparros has stated that he will only be sold if Nzonzi’s suitors meet the clause.
Would definitely add to midfield options
Steven Nzonzi would certainly add to the Gunners central midfield options. The former Blackburn star has matured into a fine defensive midfielder during his time in Andalusia.
His development has seen Nzonzi become a regular squad member for Les Bleus, who he made five appearances for at World Cup 2018.
Nzonzi is a tough-tackling and intelligent central midfielder, who could come straight into the heart of the Gunners midfield without a problem. He also knows the league well from his time with Blackburn and Stoke.
Gunners already have decent midfield options
Even with the future of Wales international Aaron Ramsey in doubt at the club, Arsenal now has decent central midfield options. Switzerland international Granit Xhaka is expected to line-up alongside new boy Lucas Torreira in the centre of midfield.
Mohamed Elneny and Ramsey also supplement the Gunners central midfield options, if the latter stays at the course of course.
If Nzonzi signed for the Gunners, he would expect to be first choice in central midfield, which means that either Torreira or Xhaka would miss out on a starting place. It seems unlikely that the North London club would spend a big fee on a player they will leave on the bench.
I just cannot see Arsenal signing Nzonzi. Maybe before they made a move for Torreira, but now the Uruguayan is at the club a move for Nzonzi seems less likely.
Arsenal need to sell players
Arsenal have not spent much by Premier League standards this summer. However, the north London club will be keen to recoup some of their outlay by selling players. The likes of Lucas Perez, Danny Welbeck, Petr Cech and David Ospina have all been linked with a move away from north London this summer.
It seems more likely that the Gunners will sell some of the fringe players before they bring anybody else in, simply because of their reported low transfer budget. I highly doubt that all the summer transfer business has been concluded just yet in north London. It seems doubtful that Sevilla will change their stance Nzonzi though.
