Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs looks set to leave the club this summer after being left out of the squad for the Emirates Cup, reports The Sun. The England international has been linked with a move to Watford, West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United and was previously left out of the pre-season tour as he negotiated his exit.
There’s been little progress since. West Bromwich Albion have pulled out of the deal, while Watford and Newcastle United aren’t keen to meet Arsenal’s £15m asking price. Gibbs has hardly featured for the Gunners in the last 12 months, making just eight Premier League starts in 2016/17. His contract is up next summer so Arsenal are running out of time to get value from the left-back.
Albion failed with a £10m bid and weren’t prepared to raise their offer given Gibbs is now third in the pecking order. Arsenal have no place for the long-serving 27-year-old with Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac preferred for the left-back role, coupled with no new deal being put on the table.
He hasn’t made any public statement of wanting to leave or stay but his ploy may be to keep quiet and run his contract down before finding a new club. Gibbs is 4/7 to join Watford this summer nevertheless.
