According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea are looking to hijack Liverpool’s deal to sign Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer and may bid £25m for the Englishman’s signature. The Blues have struggled to strengthen the squad as much as manager Antonio Conte wanted, which sees Chelsea desperately targeting homegrown midfield reinforcements as a result.
Oxlade-Chamberlain is out of contract at Arsenal in 12 months and has so far rejected a contract extension. The 23-year-old is believed to be frustrated with a lack of playing time in his favourite position for Arsenal while playing second fiddle to the competition. When featured as a wing-back, Hector Bellerin remained first-choice. And when played in midfield, Granit Xhaka and Aaron Ramsey remained first-choice.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has long been keen on the Arsenal midfielder and could well play him in his favourite role. With great dribbling ability, plenty of pace and often fantastic vision in possession, Oxlade-Chamberlain has a lot of attributes that make him a coveted player this season. But the Reds will have to fend off Chelsea in order to sign him.
It’s hard to see Arsenal doing business with the Londoners, meaning Liverpool stand a good chance of procuring his signature. However, Arsenal are likely to retain Oxlade-Chamberlain for another year, meaning suitors will have to wait until next summer where the player is free to make his own decision. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is 4/6 to stay at Arsenal this summer.
