According to Sport Bild, Arsenal have competition from Barcelona and Manchester United for Leon Goretzka’s signature. Bayern Munich have also been linked with the Schalke midfielder recently and were previously rumoured to have agreed a pre-contract deal. However, such claims turned out to be false.
The German international helped his country win the Confederations Cup in the summer and will be hoping for more opportunities with Joachim Lowe by continuing to impress at club level. Goretzka looks to be running his contract with Schalke without any plans to extend his stay at the Veltins-Arena, so he’ll have a host of suitors in January and next summer.
Barcelona and Bayern are reportedly leading the race, although that hasn’t stopped the likes of Liverpool showing an interest. The midfielder would be a talented and cheap option, available a pre-contract deal for foreign clubs in January, meaning Bundesliga side Bayern may have to pay a fee to sign Goretzka when the winter window opens.
The 22-year-old may get more game time if he opted for a Premier League side, but the chance to join a stellar outfit such as Barcelona isn’t going to be passed up. There may be a void in the Catalans’ midfield with the likes of Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets no longer heavyweights of the past, but his future isn’t likely to be decided until the new year.
