Arsene Wenger is keen to close the gap in the Premier League table between Arsenal and Tottenham with a win this weekend as the Gunners take on their London rivals in a massively important match as the race for the top-four continues to heat up.
Arsenal’s last Premier League game ended in a superb victory as they dismantled Everton. The Toffees were no match for the Gunners on the day as they were hammered 5-1 at the Emirates Stadium.
Aaron Ramsey notched a hat-trick, while Laurent Koscielny and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang completed the scoring on what was a very good day for Arsenal. Perhaps the only criticism of the side was that they did not score more goals as they spurned a number of good chances to extend their lead further.
The win saw the gap between themselves and Tottenham cut to four points after Spurs and Liverpool played out an entertaining 2-2 draw. A win at the weekend for the Gunners would see the gap ground down to just one point, while a defeat would see Arsenal seven points short of Spurs, meaning a loss is something Arsenal cannot afford.
This is something that Wenger will be all too aware of, and he is desperate to cut the gap between the two sides. He told Sky Sports: “There is always huge passion before the game and the emotion at stake that becomes a bit more agitated. This season, if you look at the table, is a very important game. For us, it is an opportunity to come back closer to the Champions League places, which is a priority”.
Arsenal’s last two away games ended in defeats to Bournemouth and Swansea, and Wenger will want to ensure that this run is not extended to three defeats in three away games.
