With Arsenal now looking likely to cash in on their selling rights for Real Sociedad Carlos Vela (for around £10M) should they be using the Mexican to push through a deal to sign talented winger Antoine Griezmann?
Arsenal are 5/2 to win the race for his signature, but haven’t made a genuine approach for the 23-year-old yet, while the move to relinquish Vela of his attached buy-back clause is gaining momentum.
Vela, 25, has enjoyed a prolific spell in Spain since his move from Arsenal. His goal contributions have been superb for Sociedad, scoring 12 and assisting 7 in 2011/12, 14 & 9 in 2012/13, and 16 & 12 in 2013/14.
He’s matured into the player Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger always knew he could under the right circumstances, and as a result wanted to bring him back this summer for £3.5M (his buy-back clause).
But the Mexican international is a very valuable player for Sociedad, who have already made it clear they don’t want to lose him, so should Arsenal have used him to get Griezmann in the opposite direction?
Griezmann was superb last season La Liga, scoring 16 goals in 35 games. Arsenal have been linked with him for a long time, but now have a bargaining chip to push through a deal. Let Sociedad remove the clause attached to Vela in exchange for Griezmann’s signature.
Sociedad’s lack of European participation should mean the likes of Griezmann would consider moving to a side regularly going deep in the Champions League and challenging for trophies.
