La Liga side Sevilla look set to lose one of their key players this season as Steven N’Zonzi has refused to extend his contract with Rojiblancos amid interest from the likes of Barcelona and Arsenal.
According to Spanish media outlet AS, N’Zonzi did not want to put pen to paper on a new deal as it would have increased his buyout clause well over the current €30 million, which the player feels would ultimately ruin his chances of making a move elsewhere.
Sevilla sporting director Monchi is believed to be eyeing up replacements for the reliable midfielder as he is not certain if N’Zonzi will remain at Sevilla past the January transfer window.
The French international has been closely linked with Barcelona over the last couple of weeks, but the latest reports claim that Arsenal are also stepping up efforts to try and bring the 28-year-old player to the Emirates.
Former Stoke City player N’Zonzi is not closing the door to a Premier League return and is believed to be tempted to a prospect of playing under Arsene Wenger.
N’Zonzi would definitely be a valuable addition to the current crop of players the French tactician has at his disposal as Arsenal are short of numbers in central midfield in the crucial part of the season.
With Mohamed Elneny out at the Africa Cup of Nations, Santi Casorla injured and Granit Xhaka unable to control his tackles, N’Zonzi would very much be a welcomed boost to the centre of the park.
Arsenal are currently trailing eight points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea and are preparing for a Southampton game in the FA Cup at the weekend.
