Arsenal’s Spanish striker Lucas Perez is set for a summer return to former club Deportivo La Coruna, according to the Daily Star.
Lucas only arrived at Arsenal last summer from Deportivo for a reported fee of around £17million. The Gunners snatched the striker out of the grasp of Premier League rivals Everton.
However, Lucas has failed to get much of a chance in north London and it seems he could make a loan move back to his former club.
Struggled for starts at Arsenal
Lucas has started just two Premier League games for the Gunners and made 22 competitive appearances for Arsene Wenger’s side in total. However, with the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck for competition he has struggled for action.
Sanchez had impressed for much of the early season in the central striker role, while Welbeck is now back to fitness and Giroud is considered as a player that gives the Gunners an extra physical dimension.
Quite where Lucas fits into the Arsenal set-up remains to be seen. Lucas is currently behind all three of the aforementioned forwards in the pecking order for that central striking role in the team.
Arsenal fans wanted a top-class striker
Arsenal fans have been crying out for a top-class striker for years now. So when Lucas arrived his signing was a slightly underwhelming one. The Spanish striker arrived in north London with just one prolific scoring campaign under his belt, last season.
At 27 years old he was not considered one for the future either, so the signing had to be regarded as a strange one from Arsenal. It was felt that the Gunners needed an extra striker in the summer, but maybe the fans had hoped for a striker of a slightly higher quality.
Looks like the move could happen
The Star claims that any move would be dependent Arsene Wenger staying at the club. Lucas is apparently happy in London, but is unhappy at his lack of first opportunities so is seeking a move elsewhere.
It seems that Deportivo are unlikely to be able to afford to sign Lucas a permanent basis, so will look to sign the forward on loan for next season. He would reportedly consider the move, as he is hoping to get himself into contention for Spain’s squad for next year’s World Cup.
No doubt Lucas has not been given much of a chance at Arsenal. However, his signing never quite seemed the right one for Arsenal and he could soon be heading home.
Should Arsenal allow Lucas Perez to leave this summer?
