Arsenal set to renew interest in Dortmund star

According to German football publication Kicker, Arsenal are set to renew their interest in Dortmund defensive midfielder Ilkay Gundogan in the summer.

Turned Down

The Gunners reportedly had a bid of around £18.4million turned for the Germany international in the January transfer window, but could put in an increased bid to sign the player who has been consistently linked with a move to north London for the past few years.

Competition

Despite an injury-hit few seasons with the German giants, Gundogan is still highly-regarded by some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Should the 24-year-old move on then Arsenal could face stiff competition from the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona for his signature.

Injuries

Gundogan has only returned to the Dortmund first team in recent months after an injury-hit 18 months. The 24-year-old has yet to rediscover the form which saw him attract the attention of some of Europe’s biggest hitters in the past.

Available

Due to his unconvincing return from injury and the fact that Jurgen Klopp’s men are closer to the Bundesliga relegation places than the title, Gundogan is likely be to be available this summer as the former-Bundesliga team look to shake-up their squad.

Lacking

Defensive midfield is a position that Arsenal have been found wanting in the past few seasons, as the likes of Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini have tried and failed in attempting to protect the Gunners back line.

The emergence from the shadows of French midfielder Francis Coquelin has given the Gunners a very promising long-term option in the position.

However with the north London side set to be in the Champions League next season, (they are now odds of 1/100 to qualify) Gunners boss Arsene Wenger will need to strengthen his defensive midfield options.

Both Arteta and Flamini have been linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium this summer. Arteta has struggled to feature much through injury this season and Flamini is out-of-contract in the summer.

Strong

The Arsenal squad is strong in other areas of the pitch, but for me if the Gunners are going to shell big money on a player it may be a defensive midfielder. I have my reservations about Gundogan’s injury record and recent form.

Despite the German internationals undoubted talent there are still question marks about whether he has truly overcome the injury which has stalled his development.

Signing Gundogan would maybe be too much of a risk considering the Gunners record with injury-prone players in recent years.

Would Ilkay Gundogan be a good signing for Arsenal?
