According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal may be forced to sell forward Danny Welbeck and midfielder Aaron Ramsey in the summer. Both players’ contracts have just 18 months left to run.
The fact that German playmaker Mesut Ozil recently signed a deal worth £350,000 per week has led to fears that the new wage structure within the club may cause rifts within the squad.
Avoid mistakes of the past
Arsenal are keen to keep Ramsey. They have opened talks with the Welsh international over a new deal with the club. However, the midfielder is currently on £110,000 per week. He is likely to demand a big pay rise, especially after the recent change in the clubs wage structure.
If the Gunners cannot agree a new deal with Ramsey, then they may have to sell the midfielder in the summer. The north London club will be desperate to avoid a repeat of the situation of January when both Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil had just six months left on their contracts at the club.
Welbeck is in the same position. Reportedly, the striker is eager to sign a new deal with the club from the capital.
However, the England international is probably more dispensable than his Welsh teammate. The forward is way down the striking pecking order in north London after the January signing of Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Jack Wilshere out of contract
England midfielder Jack Wilshere is out of contract at the Emirates Stadium in the summer. The midfielder has been offered a contract extension but is yet to agree to the deal.
He is believed to be keen on staying with the north London club. However, media reports suggest that he has not been offered a pay rise. The clubs new pay structure may lead to the midfielder thinking twice before signing a new deal.
Arsenal need to be decisive
Aaron Ramsey has shown flashes of good ability during the last few seasons. He has rarely been able to find any decent level of consistency in his time as an Arsenal player. However, he does have potential to improve in the future. For me, it would not be a disaster if Welbeck leaves the club.
The clubs hierarchy cannot allow the club to be taken advantage of, though and needs to be decisive in their decision-making. If a deal is not agreed in the next six months, then both players should be sold in the summer.
