According to reports from Portuguese Publication A Bola, Arsenal are set to make a double swoop for Sporting Lisbon pair William Carvalho and Gelson Martins, who are believed to be valued at £70million.
According to a Daily Star report, Arsene Wenger is hoping to tie up a quick deal for the Portuguese international pair.
Pair are highly rated
Both Carvalho and Martins are highly rated throughout Europe. The Gunners have been reportedly interested in signing defensive midfielder Carvalho for the last few years. However, most of Europe’s top clubs have been linked with moves for the 25-year-old.
Carvalho had long been mooted as the answer to Gunner’s defensive midfield conundrum. Grant Xhaka’s presence in the centre of the Arsenal midfield has somewhat solved their problem.
However, a partnership of Carvalho and Xhaka in the centre of midfield would be a formidable one for opposition teams to get past.
Winger Martins was impressive for Sporting last season, weighing in with seven goals and 14 assists in all competitions.
Both Manchester United and Liverpool had reportedly tracked the 22-year-old in the past, which is maybe why Wenger wants a deal conducted in a swift manner. Martins is highly skilful and has pace to burn and would definitely add something to the Gunners team.
Wenger unlikely to pay much more out
With the Gunners set to sign Alexandre Lacazette for big money, I cannot see Arsene Wenger spending another £70million this summer on two players. The Frenchman spent just over that in the whole of last summer signing the likes of Shkodran Mustafi, Granit Xhaka, Lucas Perez and Rob Holding.
The veteran boss is usually very careful with the clubs money. He is an economist as we know and does not spend money as easily as some Premier League bosses do.
Wenger may well spend that sort of money if the Gunners sell star player Alexis Sanchez this summer. He is likely to bring in a big fee but will have to be replaced.
Having watched Carvalho on a number of occasions, I do believe he would be a good signing for Arsenal. In fact, he would probably be a good signing for most English clubs. I am not sure how much he is valued in the price tag though.
I have seen less of Martins. However, whenever I have seen him he has looked dangerous and a threat to the opposition defence.
Whether anything comes of this deal only time will tell. Let us just hope the Gunners hurry up and tie up the deal for Lacazette.
