According to the Evening Standard, Arsenal could pull out of the race to sign highly-rated Nice central midfielder Jean-Michael Seri. Premier League and London rivals Chelsea are now expected to make a move for Seri.
Seri has long been linked with a move to north London, as the central midfield roles have proven a problem position in recent years. For example, Switzerland international Granit Xhaka still has a lot to prove at the club.
Available for £35million this summer
According to the Standard’s report, Seri will be available for £35million this summer. It is fair to say his displays in Ligue One have not gone unnoticed.
The 26-year-old has been linked with a number of the Premier League’s club including Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United. It seemed that Arsenal were also among his suitors.
However, it seems that the Gunners may be focusing their attention on cheaper alternatives such as Roma’s Lorenzo Pellegrini and Hoffenheim’s Kerem Demirbay, as they look to strengthen in the centre of the park.
A restricted transfer budget could be the main reason the north London club may be pulling out of the deal. A £35million signing would not leave much cash left to spend elsewhere strengthening other weak spots in the team and squad.
Wilshere and Ramsey futures in doubt
It seems that any plans to strengthen the central midfield could hinge on the futures of Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey. Gunners boss Unai Emery is reportedly keen on keeping both players.
However, Wilshere is out-of-contract in less than a month, while Ramsey has just over a year left on his deal in north London. The Gunners are understandable looking to avoid the contract stand-off they endured with Alexis Sanchez before the Chilean left for Manchester United in January.
Even if the pair stayed, the Gunners should be looking to recruit a better class of defensive midfielder this summer. Both Ramsey and Wilshere are attack-minded, while Seri can also play as a defensive midfielder.
Arsenal hands tied due to budget
While the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United will probably spend big this summer, Arsenal are likely to be more thrifty with their budget.
Head of recruitment Sven Mislintat will need to be creative in the transfer market to improve the Gunners squad, as he looks to be the main man when it comes to transfers at the minute.
The transfer window could be an interesting one for Arsenal fans, but history tells us that the Gunners will not splash the cash.
Would Jean-Michael Seri be a good signing for Arsenal?
