Former-Arsenal star Robert Pires has said that Arsene Wenger is the right man to manage the club. The comments come after further pressure was piled on Wenger following Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.
Pep Guardiola’s men dominated their opponents at the Etihad Stadium in a win that was not a surprise However, it was not quite the hammering that many had predicted, with the Gunners keeping the scoreline respectable.
Goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus were only answered by Alexandre Lacazette’s strike. The game was marred by Wenger’s comments about Raheem Sterling as the Frenchman accused the winger of diving.
The loss leaves Arsenal 12 behind Manchester City at the top, while they slipped into sixth place following Liverpool’s win over West Ham. The defeat was about as bad as it could get for the Gunners, with their Premier League title aspirations in tatters.
The Premier League was seen as the most alluring target for the side in the build-up to the season following a number of successful campaigns in the FA Cup. However, this does not seem to be enough anymore, and a sole triumph in the cup is likely to be viewed as a failure this season.
With all the criticism though, former-Arsenal legend Robert Pires has given his former manager his backing, as he told ESPN: “For me, he’s still the man. He has done well for a long, long time. Sometimes it’s difficult with a lot of pressure from the fans and media, but he’s always very relaxed and confident. He always believes in the players, and that’s a positive”.
“We lost the last game against Man City, but City have played really very well since the beginning of the season. I feel that there is still good quality in this Arsenal team — maybe we just need more spirit and commitment”.
The backing comes at the perfect time for Wenger, with pressure mounting once again. Their next game is against rivals Tottenham, and it is one they simply cannot afford to lose.
