According to the Daily Star, Arsenal are interested in signing Nice’s Portuguese right-back Ricardo Pereira, who is rated in the £20million-bracket. The 23-year-old is on loan from Portuguese club Porto. Pereira is in his second year of his loan spell and has impressed for the French leaders.
Nice are currently top of Ligue One, ahead of the likes of Monaco and PSG. Pereira can play in either full-back position and also played as a winger earlier in his career. One of his main attributes is regarded as his pace. He is considered to be one of the top defenders in Ligue One so far this season.
Cover for Hector Bellerin
Spanish full-back Hector Bellerin is undisputed first-choice right-back for the Gunners. However, it seems that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger wishes to add cover for the youngster. The north London side already have cover for Bellerin in the likes of Carl Jenkinson and Mathieu Debuchy.
Both players have been linked with exits from the club in the January transfer window. Jenkinson has been linked with a number of clubs, including West Ham and Crystal Palace. The 24-year-old will have to move to play regular first team football in the near future.
Wenger is also reportedly ready to listen to offers for Debuchy, with former Newcastle defender struggling to impress at the Emirates Stadium, partly due to injury problems and partly due to Bellerin’s form.
Arsenal would be unlikely to offload both players in January and leave himself exposed to injuries, so if the pair were to leave then the Gunners would have to sign another backup for Bellerin.
Wenger does not like the January window
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is not a big fan of the January transfer window. Recently when he was asked about whether it would be a busy January, he said no and started to talk about having injured players back to full fitness.
It seems doubtful that Wenger will be very active in the winter transfer window. The experienced Frenchman does not like to spend the clubs money, with the exception seemingly last summer.
Pereira has been in decent form for Nice and looks like he may well be a decent signing for the Gunners in the future. He is still relatively young and can probably develop into a very good player. However, I doubt he will be heading for north London in the January transfer window.
Should Arsenal pursue an interest in Ricardo Pereira?
