According to reports from France and the Metro, Arsenal are in talks to sign French winger Rachid Ghezzal in the summer. The winger is currently at Ligue One club Lyon, but his contract expires in the summer. That means Ghezzal will be a free agent in the summer and could prove to be a bargain buy.
Reports in Italy suggest that Arsenal have already held talks with Ghezzal agent. However, a number of clubs are believed to be interested in signing the Algerian international, including Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Monaco, Valencia and Everton.
Made a fine impression last season
The 24-year-old was a standout player in the French top-flight last season, scoring eight times and producing eight assists. His performances led to the Algerian star being linked with a move to the Premier League, as Ghezzal is believed to have turned down a move to Everton last summer.
This season has Ghezzal’s campaign has been hampered by a hamstring injury and he has made just nine appearances for OL. Ghezzal has registered two goals and two assists for Lyon this season.
His lack of appearances does not seem to have stopped the interest in the player from Arsenal or elsewhere.
Arsenal have a plethora of attacking midfielders
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger seems to like stockpiling attacking midfielders. The likes of Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lucas Perez, Danny Welbeck and Aaron Ramsey can all play as attacking midfielders.
That is without even mentioning Jack Wilshere, who is currently on-loan at Bournemouth. The England international is likely to return to the north London club in the summer. Even without Wilshere the Gunners still have a lot of attacking midfielders in their squad.
Then there is the fact that there is major doubt over the Arsenal futures of Ozil and in particularly Sanchez.
Could be a useful addition
No way could Ghezzal would ever be considered a replacement for either Ozil or Sanchez, if either leaves Arsenal. However, he looks like a useful player and Wenger loves a bargain, so a free signing would be right up the Frenchman’s street.
At the moment he looks like a decent player and be a good signing if of course, he can put his injury problems behind him. However, I doubt Gunners fans would be pleased if either Ozil or Sanchez leaves and the Algerian international is signed on the cheap as a replacement.
Would Rachid Ghezzal be a good signing for Arsenal?
