Arsenal have reportedly been on the trail of Dortmund striker Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang for the past few years. The national and international media have informed us in the past that the Gunners were set to sign the striker on a number of occasions.
However, it seems that the Gunners are optimistic about signing the striker this month, according to Sky Sports Spanish football expert Guillem Balague. He told Sky Sports: “It’s clear that Arsenal are in conversations with the player (Aubameyang) and Borussia Dortmund.
“They think they’ve convinced the player to join Arsenal, but of course there’s still a big obstacle to beat, which is: Borussia Dortmund.
“Arsenal will hear tomorrow if Dortmund are selling cheaply, expensively, quickly, or if they’re willing to sell at all. Nobody expects this deal to happen early in the week; it may take the whole week, or even more.
“Arsenal are willing to pay 60m euros (£53.3m). They are optimistic – they think this is a deal that could be done.”
Aubameyang is not a direct replacement for Alexis Sanchez
Alexis Sanchez is seemingly off to pastures new in the near future, with Manchester United and Chelsea reportedly fighting for the Chilean’s signature. That would mean there would be a Sanchez shape whole in the Gunners team.
Aubameyang is a stone cold goal scorer and is very good at his job. However, his preferred position is as a central striker. He has in the past played out wide, but he does his best work as a striker.
Aubameyang is definitely not a direct replacement for Sanchez. He would more likely be competition for French striker Alexandre Lacazette for the central striker role. That would be interesting to see, Arsenal with two good quality strikers. I doubt Arsene Wenger would change to two out-and-out strikers.
A more likely replacement for Sanchez is either Manchester United playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who is being linked with a move as part of the Sanchez deal. Alternatively, a move for Bordeaux’s highly-rated Brazilian star Malcom, as the youngster has been heavily linked with a move to north London.
Arsenal need to sign quality this month
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger does not like signing players in the January transfer window. However, with Sanchez more than likely leaving the veteran French boss needs to bring in a replacement this month.
The next few weeks could be very interesting at Arsenal in the transfer market. Hopefully, the Gunners can strengthen their squad before the end of the month.
Could Arsenal finally sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this month?
