Arsenal considering move for Barcelona midfielder

Posted on June 19, 2017 by David Nugent

According to reports from Turkish newspaper AMK, Barcelona’s Turkish midfielder Arda Turan is interesting Arsenal. In fact, the reports suggest that the Gunners are set to make a bid of around £26million for the former Atletico Madrid star.

The Turkish international has failed to have a major impact since his arrival in 2015. He is considered by many in Catalonia to have flopped at the Spanish giants, as he has failed to nail down a regular starting spot at the Nou Camp.

Would Wenger really pay £26million Turan?

I have to say I really liked Turan at Atletico Madrid. He looked like a real force to be reckoned with in the Spanish capital. He looked like a very talented and energetic midfielder. However, he seems to have lost his zip at Barcelona.

Maybe it is the lack of playing time that has dulled his sharpness in the Catalan capital. At 30 years-old he is no spring chicken either. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is not accustomed to bringing in older players.

He very rarely signs a player in his thirties. In fact, he tends to start selling players when they get close to their thirties, so Turan does not seem to be a Wenger signing.

The transfer market is crazy at the moment, so £26million is not a fortune really in the grand scheme of things. However, Wenger looks unlikely to pay that sort of fee for a player of 30.

Rivals for Turan

If Arsenal were serious about signing the Turkish international then they would have some real competition. Inter and AC Milan are reportedly interested in signing the experienced star.

Both Italian giants have been taken over by owners with big resources, so are expected to splash the cash this summer. Arsenal are unlikely to get involved in any big-money bidding wars, as it not the north London clubs way when it comes to transfers.

Arsene Wenger will want value for money, which is hard to find in the current crazy transfer market. Signing Arda Turan for a big fee is unlikely to sit well with the Frenchman, even if Turan is a quality player.

The summer is young and Arsenal have already secured Sead Kolasinac on a free transfer, but to shorten their 12/1 odds of winning the title next season Arsenal need to get serious in the transfer market this summer. With Wenger in charge, I would not hold my breath, though.

Would Arda Turan be a good signing for Arsenal?
