Arsenal have confirmed that Lucas Torreira will join the club from Sampdoria, though they stress that the deal is still subject to regulatory processes.
After a relatively long saga, it’s officially confirmed that the Uruguay international will be a part of Arsenal’s new-look team under Unai Emery. Having spent four seasons in Serie A, two with Pescara (42 appearances, six goals) and two with Sampdoria (74, 4), Torreira is ready to taste the challenges of playing in the Premier League.
At only 22, he is excellent in sitting at the base of midfield, keeping the things ticking over and recycling possession, as we were able to witness at the World Cup. Another quality that his exploits at the tournament in Russia revealed is that he doesn’t shy away from producing on a big stage. Uruguay eventually went out in the quarterfinal by losing to France, but the newest Gunner did himself no harm in the tournament nonetheless, featuring in all five of their games.
Emery is obviously excited about landing another one of his primary targets in Torreira. Referring to him as a bright talent and a midfielder of of great quality, the manager reveals that he thoroughly enjoyed watching him play for Sampdoria over the pas two seasons. He sees a player of decent experience in him, but one that is also ready to grow further, and he is looking forward to working with him in pre-season this summer.
After Mesut Özil took the shirt No. 10 recently vacated by Jack Wilshere, Torreira will now take the No. 11, previously worn by the German playmaker.
The 22-year-old has a tattoo of a lion on his arm, and he says the feature represents what he is, on and off the pitch. He says he loves tattoos in general, and that the lion is actually a symbol of strength and spirit, things he claims all Uruguayans have.
