Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been accused of not wanting to spend the clubs money. Yet two of the players he has spent big money on in recent seasons, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez could well be leaving the club in the summer. Both players will have just 12 months left on their contracts in north London.
The announcement by Wenger that the club are going to leave the contract negotiations until the summer suggests that the pair could be on the verge of leaving the club.
They are special players
While Ozil comes in for a lot of stick, the German playmaker is a special player on his day, as is Alexis Sanchez. They are the sort of special players that every winning team needs. However, it is not their fault that their teammates are not quite at the same level quality wise.
I have heard people criticise Sanchez in recent weeks for sulking. To be fair to Sanchez he seems like an emotional guy and he lets his disgruntlement get the better of him. He is only upset because the other players do not seem to show the same commitment to the team.
Can you blame Sanchez for wanting to leave?
Sanchez is a winner and despite his best efforts, he has won very little at Arsenal. It must be highly frustrating to see the team stagnate the way it has during his time as an Arsenal player. The Chilean does not seem to believe that his current team can win major trophies.
It seems he is in the same boat as the majority of Gunners fans. Many do not believe that Wenger can move the team forward in the near future. So you cannot really blame Sanchez for seeking a new club and a better chance of silverware in the near future.
Truly average squad if Ozil and Sanchez leave
Ozil and Sanchez are the standout players at Arsenal. If they both leave in the summer, arguably Arsenal will be left with a truly average squad of players. If Wenger stays and the pair leaves then I highly doubt that the veteran Frenchman could replace the pair, especially Sanchez.
Wenger’s transfer dealings have not been great in recent years. He spent big money on Granit Xhaka and Shkodran Mustafi in the summer and the jury is still out on both players. Neither has proven an exceptional signing.
Arsenal are already struggling to finish in the top four of the Premier League with Sanchez and Ozil in their squad. Without them then the Gunners could seriously struggle next season.
Will Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez leave Arsenal this summer?
