According to the Daily Express, Italian giants Inter are set to seal a deal for Arsenal centre-back Shkodran Mustafi before the summer transfer window closes next Thursday. The deal is reportedly a loan deal, with the option of Inter purchasing the German defender next summer.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has refused to deny that the centre-back could leave the club before Thursday deadline, which has added fuel to the fire of the story.
Mustafi has only spent one season with Arsenal. When Arsenal brought in the former-Valencia star last summer, most Gunners celebrated the centre-back’s arrival. The north London team had needed a strong centre-back for a while and Mustafi seemed to be the answer.
Endured a mixed campaign in north London
In truth, though, Arsenal looked highly vulnerable at the back at times last season, especially on their travels. Such was the Arsenal defensive problems Arsene Wenger had to switch to a back three.
Mustafi was part of that problem. He produced a number of dubious displays for the Gunners and he no longer seems to be the solution to the team’s defensive problems. With that in mind, it seems Arsenal are set to allow him to leave the club. Mustafi has definitely not produced displays of a player that has won the World Cup.
Arsenal linked with Van Dijk move
An interesting story broke yesterday in the media about Arsenal looking to sign Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk. The Gunners are currently odds of 10/1 to sign Van Dijk and he would certainly be a top replacement for Mustafi if he does indeed leave this summer.
In fact, it would be difficult to claim that the Dutchman would not be an upgrade on Mustafi. Arsenal could face a tough fight to secure a deal for Van Dijk. Southampton are insisting that they do not wish to sell the Dutchman.
Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea are also reportedly interested in signing the centre-back. If he were available the Gunners would have major competition to sign the highly rated star.
At the moment Arsenal allowing Mustafi to leave does not seem the end of the world for me. He was a big money signing. However, he is not turning out to be the player everybody connected with Arsenal expected and he may not be a major loss if the Gunners can find a replacement.
Should Arsenal allow Shkodran Mustafi to leave before the transfer window shuts?
