Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez put himself back into the race for the Premier League Golden Boot on Tuesday night with his brace against Sunderland in a 2-0 victory.
The win was not only vital for his team and kept them in the race for the Champions League spots, but also rather unexpectedly put him back in the running for the Premier League’s top scorer.
Going head-to-head with rival on Sunday
Ironically, the two goals put Sanchez just a goal behind Everton’s Romelu Lukaku on 23 goals. The Toffees forward has struggled for goals of late and has failed to score in his last four Premier League outings.
The 23-year-old has also failed to score away from home since March 05, when he scored at Tottenham’s White Hart Lane in a 3-2 defeat.
The two go head-to-head at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. Given the importance of the game to the Gunners and Everton having little to play for, it does not seem out of the realms of possibility that Sanchez could overtake the Belgian international.
Last season’s winner Tottenham’s Harry Kane is lurking with intent on 22 goals, but the England international still has two games to play, rather than just one.
Lukaku remains the favourite to win the Golden Boot award at odds of 4/7, but Sanchez has certainly put himself back in the running for the award in the last few games.
Doubts about his future
As we all know Alexis Sanchez’s future has been discussed till the cows come home. His contract will have 12 months left on it this summer, which puts the Gunners in an awkward position, as they would lose a lot of money by keeping Sanchez at the club and losing him for nothing in the summer of 2018.
The likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Juventus are just some of the clubs the Chilean has been linked with in recent months. It is unknown if Sanchez will stay or not.
However, either way, he will want to make Sunday’s game a game to remember. If it is his last game, then he will want to make it memorable for the fans. If it is not then he will be hoping to inspire the Gunners to a win that will help himself and his team to Champions League football next season.
Alexis Sanchez is an outstanding player and there is no better way to prove that than by winning the Premier League Golden Boot, which is now a realistic target for the Chilean star.
