Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez is set to be offered a league-record wage of £300,000 to stay at the club according to the London Standard.
This reports contrasts with what Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger recently said about the club not changing their wage structure to keep star players.
Sanchez is of course out of contract next summer and has been linked with a number of lucrative clubs. Chelsea and Manchester City are both reportedly ready to make a move for the Chilean.
Has he made his mind up yet?
If the story is true then it seems like a desperate last-ditch attempt to keep the clubs best player. The majority of Arsenal fans want the forward to stay at the club. He is the team’s top scorer this season and undoubted star.
According to teammate Hector Bellerin he is also the man that encourages his teammates to give more on the pitch. I thought boss Arsene Wenger should be doing that job, but it seems Sanchez’s words of encouragement have fallen on deaf ears, as the Gunners have struggled this season.
The 28-year-old has never tried to hide his frustration on the pitch. It is very visible through his body language and gestures. However, reports suggest Sanchez is happy in London and may not have decided on his future just yet.
Arsenal not contenders for the big trophies
The offer of a new big money contract may appeal to Sanchez. However, the situation at Arsenal is unlikely to change much in the summer. The Gunners are sixth in the Premier League table and currently odds of 13/2 to finish in the top four this season.
That situation is not likely to change much in the summer. The stubborn veteran boss Arsene Wenger looks set to renew his contract and the Gunners are unlikely to strengthen their squad enough to be competing for the big trophies next season.
A pay rise may be on the table for the Chilean, but the prospect of winning the big trophies is not in the near future. No doubt he could get big money at any club attempting to sign him in the summer or even next summer.
I believe most Arsenal fans would love to see Alexis Sanchez sign a new contract this summer. However, whether it will really happen remains to be seen, as Sanchez is sure to have his concerns about the direction of the club.
Will Alexis Sanchez really sign a new deal with Arsenal?
