According to the Metro, Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain wants to leave the Gunners this summer. If this is true, it will bring out mixed emotions in Gunners fans.
The England midfielder has just a year left on his contract in north London. Reports have emerged that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is not exactly doing everything in his power to keep the midfielder at the club.
Not lived up to his potential
I have always been torn on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as an Arsenal player. He arrived at the club from Southampton with a seemingly bright future ahead of him. He has yet to live up to his potential at the club.
Injuries and a perceived lack of confidence in his own ability have hampered his chances of being a first team regular at Arsenal.
An improvement in form
Ironically, last season was probably Oxlade-Chamberlain’s best campaign in an Arsenal shirt. Towards the end of the season, the midfielder suddenly found himself as the first choice right wing-back.
Hector Bellerin struggled to find his form and Oxlade-Chamberlain’s abilities suited the role perfectly. It is doubtful that the 23-year-old is likely to play there on a regular basis, but the switch seemed to bring the best out of him.
The midfielder finally found an end product last season, scoring seven times and producing eight assists for club and country. There had previously been question marks over his productivity.
His form towards the end of the campaign had convinced many that maybe he could push on and finally fulfill some of that perceived potential. The midfielder was previously one of the many players at Arsenal who had failed to live up to their billing over the past few seasons.
Doubts over his Arsenal future
According to the Metro report, Oxlade-Chamberlain is hoping to join a new club before the start of pre-season. If he does leave, the Gunners are reportedly hoping to pick up around £25million for the midfielder.
Liverpool are the favourites to sign the midfielder this summer. According to reports, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer of the OX. However, Manchester City have also been linked with making a move for the England international.
I am still not sure if I would like Oxlade-Chamberlain to stay at Arsenal. His form towards the end of the campaign was encouraging. However, if he wishes to leave then he will not be the greatest loss in the world.
