Alex Iwobi has insisted that Arsenal still have two potential routes back into the Champions League as the Premier League club battle to take back a place in Europe’s top competition.
It was a superb outing for Arsenal on Thursday night as they put one foot into the next round of the Europa League. The London side were far too good for Ostersunds as the Sweedish side barely put up a fight.
Nacho Monreal and Mesut Ozil scored for the English side while Sotirios Papagiannopoulos scored an own goal as Arsenal ensured they returned to the Emirates with a healthy three-goal lead.
It has become common knowledge that Arsenal’s last real route back into the Champions League is through the Europa League. The Gunners fell to a damaging 1-0 loss at the hands of Tottenham last Saturday which saw the gap between themselves and their rivals stretch to seven points, while Arsenal are now eight short of fourth-placed Chelsea.
With the top four so hotly contested this season, the Gunners could not afford to fall behind their opponents, yet they have once again fallen away in the league. This has seen many write them off in the league with a top-four berth surely now a distant dream.
However, Arsenal forward Alex Iwobi has insisted that the club have two ways back into the Champions League. The Mirror reported that he said: “No, we have to do our best in both competitions. That’s what we are trying to do: get top four and also win this competition. That’s the aim”.
Of course, there are still more than enough games for Arsenal to bridge the gap between themselves and those above them, but they must find consistency, or they will fall further behind. There are a number of very good teams in the Europa League this season, but Arsenal will know that they are among the favourites to win the competition.
